Work involvesplanning, coordinating and implementing substance abuse educationactivities as well as coordinating with other departments to ensurethe maximum utilization for resources available in compliance withManagement & Training Corporation (MTC) and Texas Department ofCriminal Justice (TDCJ) directives.Essentialfunctions: Ensure safety and well-being ofoffenders by continuously supervising therapeutic and recreationalactivities. Monitors offender break periods and movement.Intervenes as necessary to control or channel inappropriatebehaviors. Makes rounds, takes census counts and so forth. Reportsmissing offenders or physical symptoms to appropriate personnel andrecords improvement of same in accordance with programexpectations. Provides didactic sessions according to designatedcurricula within the program. Presents chemical dependencyeducation and life skills classes to assist offenders with basiceducation on these topics. Guides and assists clients incomplying with facility rules and regulations. Supervises clientoffender work functions in accordance with program policies such asmorning wake up routines according to established schedules.Notifies appropriate personnel of offenders failing to comply withpolicies and procedures. Monitors offender behavior andreports incidents, inappropriate or unusual behaviors toappropriate treatment team staff. Updates and maintains offenderrecords which include recording direct and indirect hours,therapeutic treatments, activity or group participation, jobreadiness progress and so forth in accordance with all local, stateand federal contractual requirements. Ensures records are complete,accurate, and up to date. Serves as member of the treatment team byreporting offender observations, incidents or unusual occurrences.Contributes to decisions regarding treatment plans, discipline,conflict intervention or privileges. Assists team in maintainingconsistent setting for treatment and planning and coordinatingclient interaction events. Performs a variety of relatedoffice and technical duties as necessary such as answeringtelephones, relaying messages, responding to inquiries regardingprogram services and policies, filing, photocopying and faxingdocuments, planning special events and assembling intake packetsand discharge packets. Promote the development ofpositive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors andintervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed. Provideregular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures andintervention techniques. Maintain accountability ofstaff, offenders and property. Adhere to safetypractices.It is expectedthat the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned withinhis/her capabilities as determined bymanagement.Education andexperiencerequirements:Graduation from an accreditedsenior high school or equivalent orGED.Current registration in, or completion of, a substanceabuse practicum program is preferred.A valid driver license in thestate of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unlesswaived by management.Post hirerequirements: Must successfully complete annualin-service training requirements and pass an annual backgroundcheck, both of which must be approved by Texas Department ofCriminal Justice. Upon hire, must complete a totalof 124 hours training in correctional awareness; training fortrainers; abuse, neglect, and exploitation cross-curriculum;screening and intake; therapeutic communities and non-violentcrisisintervention.Why: Help individualsbreak the cycle.
